Cover Interview: Whispers in Autumn by Trisha Leigh

Every Friday, I bring you a new cover interview and hope to introduce you to books you want to read, or the very least make you more excited for the book. This week's pick is...

Whispers in Autumn by Trisha Leigh
July 24, 2012 (self-published)

In 2015, a race of alien Others conquered Earth. They enslaved humanity not by force, but through an aggressive mind control that turned people into contented, unquestioning robots.

Except sixteen-year-old Althea isn’t content at all, and she doesn’t need the mysterious note inside her locket to tell her she’s Something Else. It also warns her to trust no one, so she hides the pieces that make her different, even though it means being alone.

The autumn she meets Lucas, everything changes.

Althea and Lucas are immune to the alien mind control, and together they search for the reason why. What they uncover is a stunning truth the Others never anticipated, one with the potential to free the brainwashed human race.

It’s not who they are that makes them special, but what.

And what they are is a threat. One the Others are determined to eliminate for good.

YOU GUYS. How amazing does this book sound? I've featured it as WOW a few weeks ago and have actually already read it. Guys, it is SO, SO GOOD. I am dying for the sequel now!

About Trisha Leigh:

Trisha is an author of Young Adult fiction from Kansas City, MO. She's currently writing/revising/cursing her next novel.

Raised by a family of ex-farmers and/or almost rock stars from Southeastern Iowa, Trisha always loved to tell stories. After graduating from Texas Christian University with a degree in Film, she began to search for a way to release the voices in her head. Trisha wrote a thriller and a couple of ghost stories, getting her feet wet and learning with each discarded manuscript. When she attempted her first YA novel, which would become Whispers in Autumn, she was hooked. Trisha knew then her heart lay with telling stories about and for young adults, and for anyone who loves to read and recapture those fleeting “first” moments.

Her spare time is spent reviewing television and movies, spending time with a large, loud, loving family, reading any book that falls into her hands, and being dragged into the fresh air by her dogs Yoda and Jilly.
Like everyone, Trisha's had some ups and downs, but life is good. She's writing. She's happy.

And here's the interview!

Ashelynn: I was really curious what type of cover you might get, and I must say, your cover is one of my favorites of 2012. SO freaking gorgeous! What is one cover that you absolutely freaking love (besides your own)?

Trisha Leigh: Aw, thank you so much! What a great compliment, considering how many amazing covers are floating around out there this year. For me, I'm kind of obsessed with the CODE NAME VERITY cover. It's the perfect, stark, desperate companion to the novel (which I know you agree is amazing).

A: It's true. CODE NAME VERITY is amazing. AND it has an amazing cover. What is your favorite part of your cover? I love the leaves, but I also love that she’s staring right at you… or the gold framing around the title and your name.

TL: That's such a hard question! If I had to pick one favorite part, I would choose the color scheme. You'll see why once the rest of the covers are revealed...

A: Okay, that is just mean. You totally answered the teasing question in that one! What was the cover designing process like for you?

TL: I hired a designer who does freelance work, but who also has designed covers for the Big 6 and some smaller presses. She's an amazing artist, and first asked for a short description of the story and Althea, the main character. Then she sent me a few pictures of girls, and once we decided on that, she shot me a very different concept that encompassed all four books - it was so out-of-the-box that it took me about an hour to wrap my head around it, but then I couldn't stop thinking about the idea and knew it was special.

A: Oh, that's interesting! When you saw your cover what did you do?

TL: Emailed it to my critique partners, and stared. There was a lot of staring. Also grinning.

A: Describe your covers in three words.

TL: Intriguing, Powerful, Evocative

A: Describe Whispers In Autumn in three words.

TL: Eerie, Lonely, Dangerous

A: I love teasing because it’s always fun to watch people squirm—can you say anything teasing about Whispers In Autumn?

TL: Hmm. Maybe just that in the first third of the book you might think you have it figured out, what makes Althea different and why she's such a danger to the Others, but there's more to her story and her abilities than what's clear at first glance.

Thanks, Trisha, for allowing me to interview you! Guys, what do you think of Whispers in Autumn's cover? Are you excited for this one? YOU SO SHOULD BE.

Also! if there is an author/cover you'd LOVE to see interviewed, I have set up this handy dandy form. Please help me out! If you love this series, and want to see more interviews, fill out the form. It's all anonymous, so if you are an author and want extra publicity, fill out the form! I still retain the right of final decision on who I email, though. :)

  2. I do like the cover! Although, I'm not a huge fan of the leaves, but I don't like dirt, so I'm kind of shuddering at the idea of leaves crumbling into my hair. and I'm halfway through Code name Verity... still. It's just... my heart. I feel like reading this book has me constantly on the verge of tears.
